I trust I have not wasted breath:
I think we are not wholly brain,
Magnetic mockeries; not in vain,
Like Paul with beasts, I fought with Death;
Not only cunning casts in clay:
Let Science prove we are, and then
What matters Science unto men,
At least to me? I would not stay.
Let him, the wiser [...]

I was quoted in this recent article from the Salt Lake Tribune. I said that I think that Obama is the most family-friendly and faith-friendly candidate in the race.
Check it out; it’s a pretty good (and short) article on Mormon support for various presidential candidates. I hope also that you leave a comment about where [...]

While we are on the topic of Cuba…
John McCain has objected to Barack Obama’s statement that, in the interest of change, he would meet with Raul Castro without conditions. It is obvious from McCain’s official statement that he would withhold relations from Cuba until they, “release political prisoners, allow free media, political parties, and labor [...]

Interesting article here about Clinton and Obama’s voting record on Cuba related issues. Basically, Clinton supports the same antiquated Cold War policy Bush has pursued. Obama seems in favor of more open relations with the country.

They, looking back, all th’eastern side beheld
Of Paradise, so late their happy seat,
Wav’d over by that flaming brand, the gate
With dreadful faces throng’d and fiery arms:
Some natural tears they dropp’d, but wip’d them soon.
The world was all before them, where to choose
Their place of rest, and Providence their guide.
They, hand in hand, with wand’ring steps [...]

In one of my favorite poems, “A Prayer for Old Age,” W.B. Yeats writes:
God guard me from those thoughts men think
In the mind alone;
He that sings a lasting song
Thinks in a marrow-bone.
Here Yeats makes the provocative claim that thinking is not restricted to the mind, and that the wise person is the one who is [...]

One week ago, I started this blog thinking that maybe a few of my friends would visit now and then.
To my surprise, there have been over 1000 unique visitors, none of which came directly from search engines. (Only since yesterday has the blog been searchable by Google and Yahoo.)
It’s made me think that this really [...]

Mitt Romney is expected to endorse John McCain for President today.
How much difference, if any, will this endorsement make in rallying support from Mormons who have been disillusioned by the GOP (such as those who might have been leaning towards Obama)?

Here’s an interesting article about John McCain’s decision to vote against anti-torture legislation. It’s remarkable because McCain claims to oppose torture.
I believe torture is evil as it exists counter to the Savior’s profound commandment: Love thy enemy.

I really should be moving away from all this political talk, but I guess it’s a hot topic right now.
You really need to check out this post from Adventures in Mormonism.

I am loving the dialogue about the compatibility of Obama and Mormon voters.
Many important points have been brought up in the comments to my recent post, Why Mormons Should Consider Backing Obama. In addition, Jettboy from Straight and Narrow Blog has written a thoughtful post: The Mormon Obama Mania Will End.
This dialogue warrants another post [...]

Here is a well-reasoned article from the Beehive Standard Weekly on how Mormon votes can be crucial for Obama in the West, and for this reason he has been and should continue to compromise with Mormons on important issues.
Unlike the GOP’s candidates, here is a candidate who really does appear to be sincerely affectionate towards [...]

The most read Time.com article this past week is “Christians Wrong About Heaven, Says Bishop,” in which the Church of England’s Bishop of Durham, N. T. “Tom” Wright, tries to set the record straight concerning what the Bible teaches about heaven.

In today’s leadership training meeting, Elder Holland said, “We cannot live in fear in this Church.” Elder Oaks added, “Perfect love of the Lord casteth out fear.”
Amen. Amen.

With Mitt Romney out of the presidential race, who might the Mormon faithful back?
Of course, the Church is officially neutral on political candidates and parties (thank goodness). But let’s be honest, Romney’s failed attempt at the presidency has got to upset a lot of Latter-day Saints, who overwhelming backed Romney (at least in Utah), and [...]
